We, the staff of St. Anthony's Child Care Centre believe that it is our priority to ensure quality care is provided for all the children attending the centre, through every aspect of the day. We provide this quality care through fostering a warm, safe, caring and healthy environment which is non-threatening and enables children to expand their knowledge and grow in every area of their development.
We understand that every child is unique in their development and that they learn in a variety of ways which are reflective of their needs, wants and interests. We feel that children are active participants throughout the whole centre, and that they bring an array of knowledge, which is shared with others and built upon in a positive environment.
We believe that children learn best through play experiences and therefore we provide a variety of
play-based activities that foster their physical, social/emotional, cognitive, language and creative development in a routine which is consistent but at the same time flexible. It is important that children feel that they are worthwhile and cared about by other children and adults. Children are exposed to children/adults whom are from various cultural backgrounds and additional needs.
Management of children's behaviour is guided in a positive environment where the child is given choices and an
understanding of appropriate and inappropriate behaviour. We ensure that the children are provided with various nutritious meals throughout the day, which is reflective of their religions and various cultures.
We have a comprehensive planning and programming procedure. Daily observations, child portfolios and assessments are techniques used to record children's development. Staff program as a team, to ensure every child can reach their full potential. Weekly programs focus on children's objectives and interests, room goals and various play-based activities. Programs are also focused around anti-bias, multicultural, and social justice issues and we ensure that our practices are inclusive of everyone in society. Children with additional needs are supported and planned for in an inclusive approach, staff, family members and professionals are included in the planning process.
We believe that staff are active role models for children therefore if staff work together as a team; this helps children understand the value of co-operation and team work. We believe that staff working with young children should possess caring qualities and are able to respect all children as individuals without discrimination regardless their gender, family, ethic background or abilities. We believe that staff need to work together building good relationships with children and families but also between themselves. Staff are to be communicative between one another and show genuine respect for one another in order for positive team work to occur.
We believe staff should seek to keep up to date with current trends in early childhood education and should be involved with continuous training.
We believe that the centre has an important function to play in the community providing family support and information. Therefore, we need to be responsive to the multicultural nature of the community, in order to provide a reflective centre of the community so that children may be helped by and may learn about the wider community, we believe there should be liaison between the centre and other community organisations.
